About this role

About the Role: Join a fast-growing AI and SaaS engineering team as a mid to senior backend engineer. You will own backend services in production - APIs, AI integrations, databases, and async pipelines and you will be the technical point of contact for the modules you build. This is a hands-on delivery role with real ownership. You will make design calls, review the work of junior developers, and work directly with the founders on scoping and technical decisions. Key Responsibilities: Own backend modules end-to-end, from technical design through production deployment. Design and implement REST APIs with proper validation, auth, rate limiting, and error handling. Build and ship AI features on OpenAI, Claude, and similar APIs, including prompt design, retries, cost control, and output evaluation. Design database schemas, own migrations, and optimise slow queries. Write tests, review pull requests, and hold the quality bar on the modules you own. Build and run async pipelines, background jobs, and third-party integrations in Production. Requirements: Backend: Strong Node.js and Express.js; able to design and build production APIs without hand-holding. Frontend: Minimum 1 year of hands-on React.js or Next.js; able to build and modify UI screens against your own APIs. Databases: Hands-on with MongoDB or PostgreSQL, including schema design, indexing, and query optimisation. AI / ML: Minimum 6 months of hands-on work with AI tools and APIs (OpenAI, Claude or similar), with at least one integration shipped to production. AI tooling: Working day-to-day use of AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot. Cloud: Comfortable deploying and maintaining services on AWS, GCP, Vercel, or Railway. Tools: Git in a team workflow (branches, pull requests, code reviews), plus working Docker knowledge. At least 1 year of that experience hands-on in frontend work with React.js or Next.js. Built, deployed, and maintained at least 4 backend services or APIs in product
